Day 32 - Victoria, Mahe, Seychelles

Victoria, Mahe, Seychelles. A new country and really starting to touch base with Africa now! The Seychelles are rather in the middle of nowhere in the Indian Ocean. Kenya is due west; Madagascar is south southwest of us. High is 85F low is 84F with humidity 87% - Yes, it is a warm day for exploring! However, we are here and enjoying it. Along the Esplanade we went on the “20 minute” walk into town – we do walk slow but it was certainly no “20 minutes” but we made it to the clock tower! The clock tower was a gift to the city of Victoria, Seychelles honoring the death of Queen Victoria in 1901, gifted in 1903. Along the way we passed many stands selling things. I was happy to find a postcard to send Sierra, and Stuart walked to the post office while Fred and I rested.

Time for lunch. Neither Fred nor I cared where we ate, so Stuart picked Coco Blu. It was open air on the second floor and gave us lovely views of the center of town. People are so friendly. There is quite a bit of traffic but, you rarely hear a horn honk even with the traffic builds up. I had some delicious fish curry that was pretty spicey for my tastes but really delicious. Fred opted for pizza and Stuart had a Thai beef salad. Everything was very good. We opted for local beer with lunch. Yes, I know it says Bavaria but it is brewed and bottled here in Seychelles. After lunch we were off on a walk again. In search of some fresh local spices we went to an open air or farmer’s market. After securing some delicious choices, it was a taxi back to the ship for just US$10.

Showers were much needed and we were just too tired to go to dinner. Room service!!! I forgot to say our Dutch Navy Frigate pulled in alongside this morning as we docked. This has been our protection along some of the area, in particular, Somalia. I am not sure if they will stay with us after this port. There are hundreds of islands comprising the Seychelles.
