Day 19 - Limassol, Cyprus

Another NEW country for me. We had a great day. The weather was warm but nice. We first had a stop in the downtown area where I was able to secure a postcard and a stamp. So that’s 2 postcards sent to Sierra so far. Cyprus is unique in that it is half Turkish and half Greek. Now that is not something one would say about the country but that is really what it is.

Next, we took almost a 1 hour drive up into the mountains. The area is limestone with abandoned terraces that once held grapevines and olive trees. It is a little unclear why they are abandoned. Our guide is very talkative but I can’t always understand her. We arrived at Lofou Tavern, a charming family-owned restaurant. Oh, what a meal we had. We had a Mezze menu, which is a meal with many small dishes. The dishes may be hot or cold, sweet or savory. Cypriot cuisine includes olives, hummus, seafood, and many other. Beyond that, it was abundant and fabulous! When we arrived the table was already set with red and white wine, salad, potato salad, pickled beets, hummus, tzatziki, and bread. We did think that was the meal but then came pork, pasta, couscous. It was all delicious, then we thought that was the end, but no! Chicken and potatoes followed that and more pork came out for those who could squeeze in another bite. We had plump, delicious grapes for dessert. That was a perfect ending to an excellent meal. Of course, wine kept being delivered to our table but soon it was time to go. We took a short stroll along a few of the deserted streets. I might not have mentioned this is some national holiday for them so most shops and things are closed.

It took about 45 minutes to get back to the port. We did a little shopping for gifts when we arrived, then back to the cabin to refresh. Dinner, the Billboard lounge, and off to bed.

Tonight, just before dinner we had this beautiful moon on the sea but it was so much prettier than my photo.

We took a wide swing our into the sea when leaving Cyprus. This was to avoid being anywhere near Israel or Palestine. We saw no lights or hints of trouble, we are just too far away.
