Transferring to Kapama
We left the hotel about 8:15a for the airport. We flew into a small airport called Hoedspruit. The flight was just over 2 hours but we had to wait some time to disembark. The airport is tiny and we had to wait our turn because of some Airforce activities. There is just one gate and one "baggage claim" area. It is a 2 sided room with a roof. The roll up door is opened by pulling on chains on one wall and a vehicle drives up with the luggage from the plane. A couple of men then transfer the luggage from the vehicle to the wooden platform. Surely different from what we are used to but they got the job done. Then down goes the door. Our guides were there to meet us, they had been waiting. They collected all our luggage and off we go for adventure.
As soon as we entered the game reserve we starting seeing wildlife. We had a warm and friendly greeting, a welcome beverage, and got instructions about what would happen next. We had a brief time to be escorted to our bungalow and then we had tea time followed by our first game drive. There is a schedule for our day, each day.
05:30 Wake up call
06:00 Morning tea
06:30 Morning game drive
09:30 Breakfast
13:30 Lunch
15:30 Afternoon tea
16:00 Afternoon game drive
19:00 Dinner
Just a few photos of the day are shown below. I say "a few" because I took hundreds! The lodge is lovely and the staff so accommodating. The game drives are interesting and exciting. The tracker is on the look out, but the driver sees a lot of the tracks and more. Both are so knowledgeable and there is more information given than one can ever retain! I will say we got cold after the sun went down even though we dressed in layers. The drivers don't just mosey along, they fly to locations at times to be sure you see what there is to see so the wind produced is chilling. I didn't take any photos after dark as they just don't work out for me. We had a "sundowner" long after the sun went down. After our choice of beverage and snacks we were given a "bush baby" which was a hot water bottle wrapped in a blanket to keep us cozy. It certainly helped. Following the drive the dinner was absolutely delicious with many options. Starters were French onion soup and a few salad options. The meats shown were beef fillet and lamb chops, both cooked to perfection. The scalloped potatoes were called "baked potatoes" and there were delightful sauces to go with each meat as well with 2 choices of fresh vegetables. We finished off the feast with 2 selections for dessert. There was even entertainment!
